There is no question that Viola Davis is a courageous woman. Donning the uniform of a domestic, along with Octavia Spencer (congratulations to her in winning an Oscar tonight), and paying homage to so many sisters who had to do this type of work for so long took courage and strength including withstanding the critism to move forward and tell this unmistakably painful part of the history of African American women. However, I digress. My purpose here is to discuss the beautiful natural hairstyle choice of Viola Davis, at the Academy Awards and beyond. Seeing her relinquish the weave and wear her hair naturally, as it grows from her scalp, is truly beautiful and lets us know, with certainty that Viola Davis is indeed embracing the reality that Natural Is Cool Enough and of course, that is N.I.C.E.!
Also, Esparanza Spalding lit up the stage with a beautiful and outstanding Afro, also letting the world see the beauty of natural hair as she sang "What a Wonderful World" in the "In Memorium" segment of the Oscars. Again, a sister who clearly embraces, in all of her natural glory, that Natural Is Cool Enough! I felt a sense of pride in seeing this natural beauty tonight and in my view, these sisters are winners!
