Tonight, at the University of Miami, we had the rare treat of hearing a Black, male Attorney, Giovanni H Turner, who wears braids and sometimes an Afro, discuss what it is like to be naturally "professional" in all of his various roles. It was a very interesting talk in that it is clear that wearing his hair naturally is beyond a matter of preference but also a commitment to the culture of Black people in terms of making it clear that he values and appreciates his hair as it grows out of his scalp in all settings. He discussed his hair experience from childhood through college and graduate school, in the court room, in the business arena and in Academia. The bottom-line of his perspective is definitely in line with the perspective of this blog and that is without a doubt that Natural Is Cool Enough! It was an enlightening evening indeed!
